This book covers the basic concepts of Pediatric Intensive Care in an easy to understand format. The focus of the book is on fundamental principles of critical care which are applicable to all critically ill children irrespective of primary disease. These principles are applicable to care of all sick children whether being cared, in an emergency room, a general ward, a nursing home or a PICU. The emphasis is on systematic approach to management. Priority is given to details of intensive care therapies and monitoring; relevant pathophysiology has been dealt with briefly. A chapter detailing guidelines for setting up a Pediatric ICU and an Appendix with practical details of some common procedures is specially included. The book will be helpful companion for all the Pediatric residents and Pediatricians working in the PICU. Even for those Pediatricians who are not necessarily practising Intensive Care, the information should be helpful in early recognition and optimal stabilization of critically ill children before they are sent to a referral center. About the Author: Sunit Singhi is Head, Department of Pediatrics, and Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He established the first academic Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in India at PGIMER and first postdoctoral DM (Pediatric Critical Care) training programme in India. He is the President Elect of World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS), was Vice President of WFPICCS 2012-13, and is on WFPICCS' Board of Officers since 2007 and Board of Directors as Asian Representative since 2000. He was Founder Chairperson of Pediatric Intensive Care Chapter of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (1998-2000), Chairman of Pediatric Section, Indian Society of Critical Care 2002-03 and the Founder National Convener of Pediatric Advance Life Support Courses of IAP, 1995-98. He represented India as Ambassador at the Inaugural Assembly of World Federation of Pediatric Intensive Care (WFPICCS) at Montreal in 2000 and at World Congress, Boston, June 2003. Awarded ICMR's Amrut Modi Unichem Prize for Research in Child Health for 2010, Dr. K.L. Wig Oration Award of National Academy of Medical Sciences for 2013 for outstanding teacher, Swasth Bharat Award 2010 for Pediatrics by Zee TV for public service, Claris Critical Care Oration Award of Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine – 2003 for outstanding contribution to critical care, Fellowship of American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) in 2011, Indian College of Critical Care Medicine (FICCM) in 2012, Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (FISCCM) in 2010, National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) in 2005.
